Evolving is just as good even if you have done something different in the past. And it can change by a simple question without judgement.
One of the quiet realities of becoming a dog professional is that your beliefs will change.
In fact, they probably should.
Trainer Laurie Williams has been working with dogs for more than three decades. During that time, the field of dog training has undergone enormous shifts - from traditional obedience models to the widespread adoption of positive reinforcement.
Like many professionals who started decades ago, Laurie began her career using the methods that were standard at the time.
And then something unexpected happened.
While training her dog in a pet store one day, a stranger approached her. The woman complimented her relationship with her dog and gently asked if she had ever heard of clicker training.
The interaction was brief and friendly. There was no criticism, no confrontation - just curiosity and encouragement.
That moment changed the course of Laurie’s career.
She began exploring positive reinforcement training and eventually became what is often called a “crossover trainer” - someone who moved from older training methods to newer ones.
But what she emphasizes most today isn’t the shift in technique.
It’s the mindset required to make that shift possible.
Changing your mind in a professional field can be uncomfortable. It requires acknowledging that what you once believed might no longer reflect the best information available.
For many people, that admission feels threatening.
But Laurie sees it differently.
Evolving doesn’t mean you were a bad person before. It simply means you’ve learned something new.
And in a field that depends on science, experience, and observation, learning never truly stops.
The courage to evolve may be one of the most important qualities a dog professional can cultivate - not only for the sake of dogs, but for the health of the entire industry.
This is what we strive for at Dog People Evolution, to help dog people find courage and evolve. In our DPEx(perience) Safe Space membership we welcome all people wanting to find a safe space to do this.
